Common Thread
Santa Clara University: November 13, 2023 – February 2, 2024
Threads in common, threads in conversation, threads as keepers of identity, history, and memory. Common Thread features artists Alice Beasley, Kira Dominguez Hultgren, and Michelle Kingdom. Works in the exhibition include Alice Beasley’s stitched and quilted figurative pieces, the research based woven installations of Kira Dominguez Hultgren, and allegorical embroidered compositions by Michelle Kingdom.
Common threads intersect to bring together three artists with a shared commitment to textiles. Works in the exhibition are imbued with narratives, each discrete, but collectively create a discourse around themes of identity, memory, history, and loss. Fabric, stitches, warp, and weft reveal matters both personal and universal. Similarly, each artist’s practice involves working in mediums considered traditional modes of female creative production. While Beasley, Dominguez-Hultgren, and Kingdom’s mediums have an established lineage their distinctive works are uncommon. Threads take shape with complex intentions, diverse materials, and innovative methods to present works with unique interpretations of meaning and points for connection.
